Eco-Friendly Fashion Show
The fashion show was born from my passion of recycling and teaching Spanish as a second language. I wanted to find a way to contribute to the Earth and I found it in recycling. When I started comprehending recycling I found myself teaching it to my students, it was there that I decided to integrate recycling into one of my Spanish units. I have tried multiple times to integrate recycling with different units and even though I was successful at the delivery of the Spanish vocabulary and the basics of recycling, I was not satisfied with the results from the unit. I was missing something; something more exciting. It was when was reviewing my unit about Clothing-specific vocabulary of the Spanish unit that it occurred to me. This is the perfect unit to integrate the art of recycling. The Eco-Friendly Fashion Show began as a small project where the students would learn about recycling. The students learned to choose which recyclable materials would most suit their design. This project not only sparked creativity, but also made learning the content very hands-on. Rather than have my students listen to me teach and give a test after about the vocabulary, I designed a project.
Voila! The outcome reached a point that I would have never been able to imagine. Many of the dresses were made with such precision and dedication. Between all the products, there were some that were true pieces of art that needed to be exhibited to others; to be appreciated and celebrated. Therefore, I proposed that the The Young Women’s Leadership School of Astoria’s Multicultural Club (TYWLSA MCC) create a fashion show that will parade all the the students’ hard work.
