MY BIO

I am Andrea Chaves a Technology Evangelist. During my ten years in the NYC Department of Education, my mission was to truly transform the face of education at The Young Women’s Leadership School of Astoria for a more sustainable, innovative collaborative and in a truly student-centered environment.  Under my guidance, young women collaborated to create innovative projects to inspire other young women to take an interest in the male dominated fields of STEAM. From these efforts the Digital Dance, TechCrew, Tech Explorers, the first Robotics team of TYWLS of Astoria and more projects were born. My innovative practices led the Young Women’s Leadership Network and its students to be honored by the White House, NCWIT, Hispanic Heritage Foundation, Apple, Microsoft and more, for all the achievements through innovative technology.
Furthermore, I am the founder of PineApple Women. A platform and community of Latinas that share their inspiring stories in Spanish. I started PineApple Women as a way to celebrate other Latinas, but more importantly, because we need more Latina role models for the younger generations of Latinas to look up to.

SOME OF what i've DONE

THE BEGINNING 🌎

MULTICULTURAL CLUB

I started the Multicultural Club of the Young Womens Leadership School of Astoria (TYWLSA).
Around 550 students represented 66 different countries within TYWLSA. This club was the beginning of my inspiring journey. This was the backbone to inspiration, where I comprehended what girls are capable of doing as long as you give them time, a space and some support.

MOVEMENT AT HEART 💃🏽

DANCE MY CULTURE

From the Multicultural Club, Dance My Culture Club (DMC) was born. Dance is one of the students favorite forms of expression of culture. Every year, the Multicultural club put together an annual DMC event that would gather more than 500 people, where girls showcased their culture through dance.

OUR WORLD, OUR FOOTPRINT ♻️

ECO-FRIENDLY FASHION SHOW

The Eco-Friendly Fashion Show (EFFS) began as a small in Spanish class project, in which students learned about recycling combined with a clothing unit. Throughout the years, this project became a grant fashion show and an example of what truly is an all produced students event.  Students' creativity, collaboration, determination and resilience always made the EFFFS a sold out NYC Fashion Show.

SISTERHOOD  ⚙️

TECH CREW

What was first an after school program rapidly became a community of girls with a mission to find fun ways to promote STEAM, in order to help close the gap in these male dominated fields.
Under my guidance TechCrew members created innovated, fun projects.

My main objective was to have students at the core, that became leaders and mentors. The projects gained national recognition each & every year and the girls proudly passed on their knowledge  to the following students to continue their work.

THE 7TH ART 🎬

TYWLS FILM FESTIVAL

TYWLS Film Festival is one of the projects powered by TechCrew film department. Today, it is an annual event held at the Museum of the Moving Image, where more than 20 films made in the school are showcased.

STUDENTS MENTORS 👯🏿‍♀️

TECH EXPLORERS

TYWLS Tech Explorers (TTE) is a technology summer program powered by Tech Crew. TTE welcomes girls between the ages of 12 and 17 that are interested in exploring different areas of tech, such as graphic design, film making and programing. This program strives to foster and strengthen skills that are necessary for these students to succeed in different male dominated fields. During TYWLS Tech Explorers, girls have the opportunity to visit different companies and work with, learn from, and speak with professionals how they became successful in their field.

SPARKLES & WOWS ✨

DIGITAL DANCE

The Digital Dance is an annual show powered by TechCrew. It started as an idea of wanting to infuse their technology expertise within TechCrew with art to create something innovative. We built a team of 50 girls that ranged from 6th to 12th grade who code, engineer, dance, graphic design, animate and film. We challenged the girls to push their knowledge, talent and discipline to collaborate and conceptualize their idea and create something never seen before.

CONTINUING THE INSPIRATION 🍍

PINEAPPLE WOMEN

After a decade of teaching, I started PineApple Women. A platform and community of women that celebrates Latinas with inspiring stories as a way to make more visible latina role models for other women and the younger generations to look up to.
